Finishing the Record… FINALLY.

one comment

For those of you who didn’t know, earlier this month we spent one last week in the studio in Nashville finishing up tracking for the record. We thought. We got to the end of that week and still had a couple more background vocals, horn parts, and a couple guitar overdubs to knock out before it was finally done. So today Joe and Russ (with the help of Luke, who drove his own car down and escorted the guys to the studio) will begin one last 24 hour session in Nashville polishing off the remaining pieces of the puzzle. In honor of Dustin and Mark (who sadly couldn’t be here with us), we will keep you up to date on everything we do… mostly so they can log on and read it and still be a part of it with us. We miss you guys!

So, with a fresh cup of coffee in hand, we begin the final studio session.

  • 12:40pm Roll into the studio where Stephen awaits us with a smile and a fresh pot of coffee. Beef is thawing on the kitchen counter. The real reason we are here is for the best hamburgers on the planet… compliments of the King of Beef himself, Stephen Leiweke. Mmmmmmm, we can taste it already….
  • 1:15pm Luke is cutting out pictures of Mark and Dustin’s faces. We are attaching them to paint sticks and positioning them around the room so we don’t feel so lonely. Joe is setting up his gear and we’re discussing which of these last parts we want to bust out first.
  • 1:21pm We’re going through Stephen’s thorough checklist of songs/parts, listening back to some tunes, etc. to determine exactly what remaining pieces remain for guitar, vocals and horns. There’s not much left to do… which is very exciting. The end is near…
  • 2:17pm Joe is laying down some sweet guitar stuff on the final chorus of “Comfortable.” As if this track wasn’t hot enough….
  • 3:03pm We’re tweaking spots here and there, Joe has laid down 3 or 4 little bits of hotness so far and is now on “Cryin’ Shame.”
  • 5:20pm After a short break for some chips and salsa, Joe’s back on the scene with some more guitar lovin’. We have tweaked a few minor vocal things along the way as well.
  • 8:58pm We’re all in what Stephen calls a “meat coma.” Dinner break is over, we’re editing a couple more small things and making a game plan for tomorrow. Just a couple more things left and then we are finished!!!!  Luke is making a mental list of which Flight of the Conchords episodes we’ll watch after we punch out for the night.

Luke, just let Stephen know that he should not turn your mic on/up until:

    A. You stop talking
    B. You are serious
    C. It’s business time
